Application Guide for TFSU 2023
International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of the international community for Chinese language teachers and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, the Center For Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) will continue with the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers for study of International Chinese Language Education or related majors at Chinese universities and colleges.
Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU) is a multilingual university with seven discipline categories—Literature, Economics, Management, Law, Education, Art and Engineering. The university now has two campuses. The Machang Road campus is located in the Scenic Five Avenues District, and is included in the Ten Sites of Tianjin. Binhai Campus is located in the picturesque university garden of Dagang District, Tianjin Binhai New Area. Tianjin Foreign Studies University, as one of the Host Institutions of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, welcomes applicants all over the world to study at TFSU. Please check the following guide for detailed information:
a) Non-Chinese citizens;
b) Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the school;
c) In good physical and mental conditions, and with a good record of academic performance and conduct;
d) Aspiring to work in the Chinese language education and related fields;
e) Aged between16 and 35 (as of 1September, 2023), with the special allowance for the age limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers and that of 25 for undergraduate student applicants.
II. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS
Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)
The programme commences in September 2023 and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years.
Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.
Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)
The programme commences in September 2023 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years.
Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study
The programme commences in September 2023, and provides scholarship for a maximum of eleven months. International students who have benefited from similar scholarships are not eligible.
For the area of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
For the areas of Chinese Language and Literature, applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).
For the area of Chinese Language Study, applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.
Scholarship for One-Semester Study
The programme commences either in September 2023 or March 2024, and provides scholarship of a maximum of five months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible. For the areas of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, Chinese Language and Literature, applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.
Scholarship for Four-Week Study
The programme commences either in July or December, 2023, and provides a four-week scholarship. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible. For the areas of Chinese Study, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taiji Culture, Chinese Language plus Home-Stay Experience in a Chinese Family, and Special Four-week Programme for Confucius Institutes, applicants are required to provide HSK test scores. The programme may be organized and applied for by a recommending institution with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made in consultation with TFSU and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for approval.
Scholarship for Online Programmes
每年9月或3月入学。一般汉语水平考试成绩需达到 HSK（三级）180 分，提供 HSKK成绩者优先。
a) Online Programme for One-year Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. A general Chinese proficiency test score of 180 in HSK (Level 3) is required, and HSKK scores are preferred.
b) Online Programme for One-Semester Chinese Language Study commences in September or March each year. Generally, applicants must have an HSK score (no specific requirements for level or score).
c) For Special Online Study Programme, please consult TFSU for specific application requirements and methods of application.
III. Coverage and Criteria for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship
The Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (four-week study students excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses. The monthly allowance for undergraduates, one-academic-year study students and one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person.
IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
a) Online registration will be available from 1 March, 2023 on CLEC website (http://www.chinese.cn). Please log on to search for scholarships, recommending institutions and host institutions; upload application materials online; and track the application progress, comments and results. Please check the email in time. TFSU will notify the review opinions, interview requirements and award results through email.
b) Recommending institutions shall, pursuant to the Guide, review the applicants’ qualifications and application documents, provide recommendation letters for the applicants and complete online recommendation.
c) TFSU shall review the application according to the requirements and submit the qualified applicants to CLEC.
d) CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be made based on HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in consideration of country distribution as well as other factors. The results will be published about three months before school starts.
e) TFSU will confirm the admission with the scholarship winners according to the results. After confirming the intention to study at TFSU, the scholarship winners shall, according to the requirements of TFSU, register in the International Student Service System（https://tfsu.at0086.cn/StuApplication/Login.aspx), fill in the application information and submit the application documents. In addition to the documents required by the application system for the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship of CLEC, the Physical Examination Record For Foreigner issued by the regular hospital (Required documents for applicants who apply for one academic year study or more) and the Certificate of Non-criminal Record must be uploaded, which are unnecessary for online programme applicants.
Notes: The examination shall be carried out in strict accordance with the items required in the Physical Examination Record For Foreigner. All the items of the form should be filled in carefully and clearly. The hospital seal should be put across the photo on the Examination Record. The physical examination form without the signature of doctor and the seal of hospital is invalid. Since the validity period of the examination results and the Certificate of Non-criminal Record is 6 months, the applicant can determine the time of physical examination and certificate issue accordingly. For example, for the students who will enroll in September 2023, it is recommended to have a physical examination and prepare the certificate after April 2023. All originals of the physical examination records must be brought for school registration.
f) TFSU will send the admission documents to the recommendation agency. Scholarship winners need to print out the scholarship certificate online, confirm with TFSU to go through the procedures of studying in China, and register according to the date and procedures specified in the letter of admission.
V. Policies Regarding Currently Employed Chinese Language Teachers and Chinese Bridge Award Recipients
a) Currently employed Chinese language teachers:
Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can be exempted from submitting Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) certificates if they can provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institution where they work.
b) Chinese Bridge Award Recipients:
Applicants who have won the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate in various Chinese Bridge competitions should submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to TFSU on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website. VI. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS
All documents provided by the applicants shall be in Chinese or English.
a) A scanned copy of passport photo page;
b) A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);
c) A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions;
d) For degree scholarship programme applicants: A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript;
e) Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL students are required to provide 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect;
f) Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employer;
g) Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China;
h) PHYSICAL EXAMINATION RECORD FOR FOREIGNR (Required documents for applicants who apply for one academic year study or more);
i) Certificate of Non-criminal Record.
VII. Deadline of application (All dates listed below are Beijing time)
a) For programmes commencing in July, applicants must complete their applications before 15 April.
b) For programmes commencing in September, applicants must complete their applications before 15 May.
c) For programmes commencing in December, applicants must complete their applications before 15 September.
d) For programmes commencing in March 2024, applicants must complete their applications before 15 November, 2023.
a) Applicants shall be familiar with the specific criteria and deadlines for registration, and submit necessary documents according to specific requirements.
b) Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.
c) Applicants will be disqualified in terms of fraudulent application materials or non-personal submission.
d) Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, submit unqualified Certificate of Non-criminal Record, withdraw from school midway, or fail to report to school or suspend their studies without permission will be disqualified for scholarship
